What are dental implants?

We use tiny titanium posts inserted into your jawbone to create a fixed new tooth root, a solid support for a replacement tooth placed on top. Titanium is used as it is very well tolerated by the body, and fuses to the surrounding bone to create a durable foundation.
Not only do dental implants complete your smile and enhance your confidence, they can also improve how you eat and speak, support and have a positive change on your facial shape and structure, reduce the loss of bone density in your jaw and ensure your existing teeth stay in place.
What does dental implant treatment involve?
At your initial consultation appointment, we examine your teeth and gums and make sure you are suitable for implants. We assess how your teeth fit together, your oral health and the volume of your jaw bone. If you don’t have sufficient bone density in your jaw to support implants, we may suggest a grafting procedure to ensure effective treatment.
We take digital scans and images of your mouth, which are used to formulate your treatment plan and accurately identify the best position for your implant. We make sure we discuss this with you, giving you the chance to ask any questions.
The titanium implant is inserted into your jaw in a minor surgical procedure. We use local anaesthetic to minimise your discomfort, and you shouldn’t feel any pain. The implant will take 3-6 months to heal and fuse with your jaw bone, so we fit a temporary tooth to protect your gum during this time.
When your implant has fully settled and successfully healed, we see you for a fitting appointment in our practice. We place your beautifully natural looking replacement tooth to reveal your new smile, and leave you to start showing it off!

For multiple teeth, we can place separate single implants, one for each replacement tooth, or use strategically placed implants to support a bridge or denture. The implant-supported denture option can be used to restore a full arch of missing teeth.
Dental implants completely mimic natural teeth, so other people will not be able to tell they are there. They are a completely solid foundation, meaning that the tooth fixed on top will not move or slip as you speak or eat. We can match the shape and shade of your existing teeth when creating your replacement tooth so it blends seamlessly into your smile.
You will likely find it is much easier to talk and eat when you have dental implants fitted. As they are fused to your jawbone, and the replacement teeth secure and supported, you should be able to talk and eat without the worry that you will feel any slipping or moving.
